Quality of life matters: Insights into RA and SLE disease activity and functionality
Abstract
Rheumatic autoimmune diseases often have a profound impact on patients' quality of life, a factor that is frequently overlooked in favor of clinical symptoms and disease management. This lecture focuses on the interplay between disease activity, functionality, and the experiences of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We will assess the metrics for evaluating disease activity in both conditions and their direct implications on patient well-being, emphasizing how these diseases can hinder daily activities, work, and social engagement, ultimately affecting mental health. We will identify key disease activity correlates that significantly influence physical and emotional quality of life and discuss strategies for clinicians to enhance patient outcomes through holistic care approaches. Additionally, we will highlight the critical role of patient-reported outcomes in effective disease management. This lecture aims to empower healthcare providers with the insights needed to improve the lives of patients managing RA and SLE, reinforcing the importance of prioritizing quality of life alongside clinical outcomes
Biography
Dr. Mehmood Riaz is an associate professor of Medicine and consultant rheumatologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, with extensive clinical experience and qualifications, including FRCP London, FCPS (MED -PK), and SCE Rheumatology UK. He completed his MBBS at Nishtar Medical College, followed by fellowships in Medicine, rheumatology training at the Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, UK and later at the National University Hospital, Singapore. His research focuses on inflammatory arthritis like RA, Connective Tissue Diseases like SLE and improving the physical and mental outcome of patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases. An international Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology (FACR), Dr. Riaz is also an Executive Member of the Pakistan Society for Rheumatology (PSR) and APLAR. He is a founding member of the Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine (PIMS). He has received awards for his outstanding teaching and clinical service.
