PRP Glue” to treat refractory haematoma in elite rugby league athletes
Abstract
In the competitive world of elite sports, every match is crucial. Professional Rugby League is a significant player in the Australian Sports Market. Athletes have a desire to play, and coaches expect that the medical team makes every effort to ensure the athlete is available to perform at their optimal functional capacity. In a collision sport like rugby league, players often experience hemorrhages in various musculoskeletal regions. This can significantly impact player performance and availability due to pain and loss of range of motion and function. Depending on the site of the haematoma, the options include compression, aspiration, or consideration of PRP injections. “PRP Glue” is a combination of platelet-rich plasma and activated thrombin. Thrombin cleaves fibrinogen to fibrin to form the basis of the fibrin clot. This presentation highlights the cases of two athletes with haematoma involving the vastus lateralis and iliac crest, respectively. Both players were at risk of missing the next fixture due to pain and functional limitations. They underwent aspiration and injection with “PRP glue” and were able to return pain-free without restriction.
